Technology Linux

You want a fast, stable, virtually virus proof computer that never needs defraging? Oh yeah......it's free now and forever. Shit can windows and tell Apple to bite you. Install Linux on your PC. I have replaced windows on all computers in the house with linux and never looked back. There are tens of thousands of free programs from Gimp (photoshop) to video editing. All of the animation studios (Avatar, shrek) use it. You can customize your install and squeeze more speed and extend the life of old PCs. Saving you hundreds of dollars.

I've used Linux and its good but prefer Windows 7 Ultimate at the moment. If you know how to secure your system with windows your alright and the only reason Windows has the amount of holes and bugs to it than Linux is obvious ... its allot more widely used than Linux and used by many companies so hence its been much more of a target than Linux to exploit. Bill Gates is hardly an idiot, the guy practically revolutionised the whole industry.

Love Mac's but too expensive for me. They are pretty secure indeed.

Something that is great with Linux is the amount of distros for it. Churchill it would be helpful if you named the distro you use and the others you've had success with. I see Linux as a good alternative but to each his/her own as they all have positives and negatives with none actually being way better than the other. Windows XP and Windows 7 are the best distros imo with Vista and 2000 being the utter worst!

Ubuntu is brilliant http://www.ubuntu.com/ (Most popular Linux distro to date)
Fedora http://fedoraproject.org/ (Has good advanced features)
PCLinuxOS http://pclinuxos.com/ (Good for those new to Linux and want to keep feel of Windows)
PuppyLinux http://www.puppylinux.com/ (Older hardware)
LinuxMint http://linuxmint.com/ (Great desktop and based off Ubuntu)
Ubuntu UNR http://www.ubuntu.com/ (For netbooks)
Debian http://www.debian.org/ (Great for system admins the most secure)
OpenSUSE http://www.opensuse.org/ (Office computers)
CentOS http://www.centos.org/ (Great for servers)
Ubuntu Studio http://www.ubuntu.com/ (Great for multimedia)
Mepis http://www.mepis.org/ (Good desktop and for everyday like Ubuntu)
Knoppix http://www.knoppix.net/ (Good desktop and for everyday like Ubuntu based on Debian)
Slackware http://www.slackware.com/ (Secure and stable desktop & server)
FreeBSD http://www.freebsd.org/ (Advanced OS for desktop and servers)

I have been on an Apple for 25 years, I have never had one issue with viruses. I have never installed any virus protection! Every PC user I know goes through HELL to get their PC secure, what is the point? Why not buy an Apple? They run both Windows and OSX seamlessly.

I think its mostly the cost and folk dont know the real treasures they offer. I'm going to get one in a few years. Linux is really good though and offers all the security one needs really. Windows gets allot of negative press with it having holes and stuff BUT remember its the most used OS and as a result it is criticize, attacked, probed and exploited on a daily hourly basis which is why the bugs are well known ... its kinda like this analogy with encryption as follows.

AES is the standard used and is widely linked with the US even though designed by Belgium's. When the competition was done to find a winner for the standard another well known cipher was used - Blowfish - it didn't win but has a wide fan base and really good ... I use it, very secure but like the security experts say AES is used daily, 24/7 by many corporations and government agencies the world over and so is probed, scanned and looked at often for hole and as of yet NONE FOUND as its never been cracked period. Compare that with Blowfish albeit very secure and probed nevertheless, its not on the same 'stage' as AES with it being the standard, so not up to the same scrutiny ... that gives a shadow cast over it compared to AES and how that has survived all these years, so the question could be would Blowfish have survived that same level of scrutiny? its not cracked either but its not had the same amount of probes on it like AES.

Windows is still standing strong with over 75% of the world using that as the OS. Its great for desktop but nothing wrong with a change.

Mike I will let you know that Military Intelligence in the UK use only ONLY Apple computers, laptops and other technology because its so secure.

Apple's OS's are based off of UNIX kernels. ;D
Getting an Apple to run Windows isn't exactly "seamless" either.

This depends on the Apple you are using. On my quad i7 running, 16 megs it is seamless, no one could tell if they were on a mac or pc.

Apple Mac's are great. I love the IPad aswell :) Anyway regarding this thread on Linux. I'm quite content atm with Linux-Mint V11 which is really good and based off Ubuntu but with more a refined look, keeping to the GNOME setup which the New Version 11 Ubuntu has gone off, looking more like a netbook OS with the desktop layout. Linux Mint has all the codecs and tools installed beforehand, its a great distro to turn to for those wanting to get away from Windows but not being bored to death or overwhelmed by other Linux-distros.

Something I have to ask here from other Linux users is can you name a really good firewall for it? I have seen Firestarter but its pretty shiet if you ask me. Linux is good and FAST no question about it. I love many things about it but like most things they all have a double edged sword and that means for me, Windows has points that Linux cannot take away from it but for now I'm content with Linux.

Linux Mints is the worlds 4th most used distro with Ubuntu 3rd and Apple 2nd Windows is 1st.

Used Red Hat and SUSE in the past. Grew out of those days because I don't want to spend the extra time on my system. Rather be working out, hiking, Penis Enlargement'ing, etc then spending more time on the computer that I already do.

Meanwhile...the US Gov't AND overwhelming majority of the Military have sold their SOULS to microsoft. It's pretty fukking sad.

I love Linux. And in a way I do not like Windows since the operating system isn't optimized any good. Every time I install Linux (I use Ubuntu) on one of my computers it runs faster and smoother then ever before. Maybe the computer are even faster, from when the computer was new, I believe so.

The only thing that's a problem for me is OneDrive (Microsoft solution to backup files), where all my files resides. But maybe there is time to find another solution for this? I also use some specific software's that have no support in Linux. There are solution for getting around this, but they are not 100% stable I think.

NVIDIA graphic drivers can also be a problem with Linux. But I believe it's way better now since Nvidia have started to collaborate with Linus Torvald (creator of Linux).

Also I use Word, Excel, PowerPoint...I know there are good softwares in Linux (other developers are making) but when your work environment have only Windows solutions, you are dependent of Microsoft.

Back in the day I had a dual boot solution on my laptop, so I could choose which operating system to boot in at every upstart of the computer.

I think I need to revisit this solution. I love Linux. Microsoft are holding Linux back with their licensing of software. I will remove my DVD drive and put a SSD (Solid State Drive) in there with Linux Ubuntu. My laptop is ~ 11 years old. 😂

I trashed my Dell stationary PC (It was a Dell Precision can't remember model number).
I regret this now, since it would have been so much easily for me to edit videos, with that old beast. You are stupid sometimes.

What do you think of the new Linux phones?

Which Android phone is cheap and yet better like Samsung?
I have a OnePlus Nord CE 5G (EB2103) you get a lot more for your money, and you don't need to be bothered with bloatware (apps you don't use, and can't remove, like on Samsung phones). It's a budget phone but it have good hardware and software. They have more expensive models as well. But why would you need that?

No crashes and regular updates of the system from time to time from OnePlus. It got a good camera from Sony.

They also even have more affordable models like the OnePlus Nord CE 2 Lite 5G.
On the EB2103 there is fast-charging so the phone charges up from 1% to 100% in like 30 minutes. Easy to extract files from the phone as well, you just plug in the usb cable and copy.

I really like this brand, so I will stick with them. I had Xiaomi phone previously they where good as well, but I got scared from that brand due to overheating issues.

I like Android since I have full control of my files. Tried to help my brother to transfer files from his iPhone (new model) one time...that was a nightmare to do. The only thing I could get out of his iPhone was his photos.

I see, thanks for sharing. I will look into the Oneplus phones.
