you can always use a bit of string / rope and just mark off were they meet and then place that against a ruler. Not to sure if that's what you meant but hope it helps.

I used the paper roll technique for my head girth. At first the head rattled around in there, now I can shove it on and let go.

Magazine type paper cut into 1/2 inch strip. Wrap it around shaft and mark with pen where the lead end touches the paper again. Then hold up against ruler. Use the original mark as a bench mark for future measurements.
