Clamping with hand for 5 minute sets

I was thinking of starting to clamp this summer, but I was thinking of perhaps a safer alternative. Clamping with the hand at the base after an erection for sets of five-ten minutes. Has anyone tried this. I would imagine that your grip would lessen as time goes on.
 
unless you have really strong hands...they might tire after a while...you can use the cable clamp...just make sure you don't click down too much...especially in the beginning...but i would tell you to try it out with your hands first and see how that works out for you.
