When is it suggested to move up in cylinder size?

hey y'all, just curious, what are the signs that you should move up to the next cylinder size? also, should I keep same height but just go wider or is it reasonable to go an inch higher as well?

Go wider but not longer. Too much room and you will not get the best pump possible
