what the * does BUMP mean?

It means, that when a thread isn't replied to it will slide down the list. Some folks reply just to "bump" it back up the list. I assume this is what you're referring to?

Simply means bumping it to the top of the list for further viewing. This makes the thread a recently viewed thread.
