Questions for military people

How difficult was the asvab? (I've been studying some stuff but the more I can learn the better I'll feel, I want to do my best and you can never be too prepared)

What was basic training like ? (I know it's somewhat different for everyone, but just a basic overview would be cool)

I also read about some week-long program before basic to get you mentally prepared or something whats that about ?

Anything else you wanna throw out there would be great too.

this coming from my friend from basic training from an email in his few days over before he shipped off to Iraq. "they underfed us, didn't let us sleep enough, worked the fuck out of us, I was always tired always sore always cold. And to top it off hell week was a pain in the ass but other then that quite nice actually"

to let you know his story he got pneumonia his 3rd week in and they told him he had broncitus so they put him on light duty and that consist of a 10 mile run which he couldn't do with pneumonia so he ends up in the hospital then they put him on light duty again before he gets better then ends up in hospital again. the 11 week basic training took him 6 months because of pneumonia.

ASVAB - I have taken some of the practice tests on the www.military.com website. It's like basic and such, some of it can be easy, and some is a little difficult. If you want good info on the ASVAB go to http://www.military.com/ASVAB

About basic training what do you want to join? I have detailed info about the USMC basic training along with all the rest of branches.

And about the week long program, I think you mean the DEP (Delayed Entry Program). You can sign up and wait up to a year before going to basic training. Meeting with your recruiter once a week, going to Marine Corps "junctions' where you can meet other people who are signed up and prepare for bootcamp. Hey Gonnabe2huge,

I joined the Marines about 17 months ago, and I think I can give you some answers.

For the ASVAB, I felt that it was very easy. The questions are very straightforward, and you will either know them or not. Coming out of high school, I thought it would be a hard test, but it really wasn't. Dont worry about it too much.

Training, though very tough overall, is not as bad as one might believe. Before going into basic, I had only read and heard about what the Marines did, such as the infamous Crucible, and I thought to myself "OH FUCK, I'LL NEVER BE ABLE TO DO THAT!" But in the Corps, they build you up in tiered training instead of just throwing you into the Crucible or any other incredibly tough training regimen. You'll start moderately tough, and end super powered. The military will prepare you for whatever tasks it has for you, so no worries. But yes, its tough. Lots of PT, lots of PT, not too much sleep, but plenty of food.

I'm not too sure about the mental preparation program because I didn't take anything like that, but I think my recruiter was talking about it a little when I went to see him before I joined.

Btw, the feeling of pride you get once you finish training is utterly incredible.

Never in my life have I ever felt so great, so powerful, or so patriotic as that day.

i was in the army in the early 90's. i agree the asvab isnt too bad as long as you did well in high school, Basic training is no big deal the better shape you are in when you go the easier it will be on you. Almost 100% of my group made it through, actually basic can be alot of fun as long as you have the right mindset going in.
