a chat room would be great! i don't think there is a need for a number of different ones though, however i could be wrong! - either way it's a good idea, i like!
I've mentioned this in the mods room and the idea of using some IRC java app such as PJIRC which is embeded into the website, so users can chat in realtime. Wouldnt be specific rooms for specific topics and its free.
I'm also wanting to setup a private p2p network with the members here who want to do so. I have the software, just need interest.
It would be our own Limewire if you will, but nothing illegal so we can share our videos, pix and whatever else one wants to share via eachothers machines.
Passwords would be shared and such because its private and encrypted network.
Also been toying the thought of my own private VPN network which members here would be invited to have access into and share files but I prefer the former as it would use my bandwidth and I would need to make policy's to cover myself from potential abuse.
The p2p idea is also shareing the bandwidth with eachother, but wouldnt be online 24/7 as its only on when the members machine is on .. but its a start and keeps costs down from a 24/7 server.
We have tried this numerous times with very little participation. An idea is set up a weekly or bi-weekly group chat on AIM. I am game to be there if anyone else is.
Whats this P2P idea Red? How would it work without being illegal?
Also, an IRC server can be created very easily on the [words=http://www.mattersofsize.com/join-now.html]MOS[/words] domain e.g. irc.matterofsize.com, then just use some open-source IRC java app. Would be alot more wiser as users would not be able to spoof usernames etc.. (as nickserv will take care of it)

Hmm a whole IRC network would be a bit difficult I guess (to set up an IRC server you need a lot of tools - and it must be 24/7 online). I think a simple channel in EFNet or any other big IRC network would be more than enough. Just an idea...
