Priapism is defined as an abnormally prolonged erection (more than 4 hours), which does not result from sexual desire. The name comes from the Greek god of fertility Priapus, usually represented by a large penis in permanent erection. It is important to understand that priapism can have serious consequences since, if left untreated, it produces penile fibrosis and permanent erectile dysfunction. It can appear at any age, later we will see with what factors triggers it.
Related to priapism are the so-called "recurrent prolonged erections". They consist of prolonged and painful erections that typically wake the patient up at night, and can occur daily. Although not as dangerous, it can be a very annoying problem. I'll tell you about that, too.
