Questions about Stealth stretcher extender.

I recently purchased Stealth stretcher extender and ADS for length gains. I am not sure if I am using the extender properly. How do the springs come in to play? When I compress the rods yes there's spring but it doesn't lock into place so whats the point of it? There are 3 notches on each side...and I believe you can achieve tension of 600, 900 and 1200 g with those notches. But if I can't "lock" the side rods on to a particular notch as the spring doesn't lock (it bounces right back up), then I see no point of the springs and all 3 notches always remain visible. So I don't have a good gauge on what tension I have and how much to aim for? I can only increase tension by adding more rods on top which makes extender quite long though still wearable under clothes.

And do you guys use it for active PE or passive PE for healing only?
