My previous goal was 8". I shortened my goal because I didn't wanted my partner to endure pain while sex.

My initial plan was to be 7.5" erect. Then, when I will be in a stable relationship, I would ask my partner how much more she could take inside her. If she says she can take some more, I would gain some more and give some more to her;).
