Yes, clearly the spot of the ball itself on that last play was quite generous. The dumb luck aspect of it is that the hit put on Leinert was executed so well it knocked the ball right out of this hands, whereas had the not fumbled, the game was clearly over. The fact that Leinert even attempted to run that play into the endzone shows poor decision making on his part, and you can bet much more would have been made out of that had USC not escaped with the win. Then there is the fact that, from everything I understand and have heard, when the ball is fumbled backwards out of bounds--the clock continues to run. Clearly, the initial call was correct...students storm the field--the streak is over. Now, some USC fans have argued the correct call was made and that the halftime commentators verified that the following week. That is not exactly what they said. It is a call rarely made because it is often hard to tell what angle the ball takes as it rolls out of bounds. Usually, we see it go pretty much laterally out of bounds. However, that ball just rocketed right out of Leinert's hands and hit the band members standing back behind the play, clearly as much of a case of a backwards fumble as one will ever see.
Oh well, sure hope Brady Quinn comes back next year. Now that guy looks promising for the NFL.
