Server sluggishness occurrences

Hi brothers. Just giving you the status on our crappy IBM server while supporting everyone's needs. We do have quite a few new brothers watching videos. That is the most bandwidth-intensive activity. There's a rise of new brothers coming in, and more bandwidth is being used up for the videos.

So, if you see the connection is a little slow, please be patient. Our brothers are watching content to better understand of the MoS PE routines. We wish we can dump the videos onto YouTube or other hosting sites to ease up on the bandwidth, but the videos would be flagged and taken offline pretty fast. Of course, we don't want to have the videos hosted at the adult entertainment sites which cause our brothers to fall into the PIED traps.

IBM just fired over 1000 employees and will be doing a lot more laid off soon. There goes any kind of quick service responses.

Based on the bandwith selected for concurrent watchers. 10 people at the same time without any glitches or delay can add up to $250/month.

However, it's not a constant video streaming every moment of every day. It's has peak periods. I see up to 15 people watching videos at the same time during the very peak period. As long as there's no sudden server failure, we're golden, with slight delays.

Perhaps re-encode some of the videos to make them smaller?

See if hosting them on a cdn would be cheaper?

Can't reencode them any smaller without losing more quality. SIM went crazy with encoding and the quality and size already topped out. I have all the encoders here, and unless new higher compression can be released to make the file any smaller without losing quality, I'm all for it.

We've done that in the past too. There are too many changed of hands and too many accounts spread across the net. We lost nearly half of those content since the olden days because no one still around to keep everything in check. Our wonderful Sheena is one person, and she's overloaded. Heaven forbid, but I'm the next guy that keep things organized. If God calls me home early, I can only provide so much knowledge to the next person in line for keeping things running smoothly. Sheena is already packed with keeping the accounts together. Any more will crack her under tremendous pressures. This is why we're keeping things as simple as we can at a single simple site. Everything is packaged together for quick backups and restoration if hell breaks loose again like last time.

Simple works for me. After some of the things the forum has been through in the last few years, being able to get back in operation quickly is good.

Sorry to the visitors and members who were in the middle of posting and got cut off. We have a sudden spike of 35K visitors at one time, causing the limited processing capacity to sputter and lag. As we see a rising trend in visitors, we evaluate increasing the processor's speed. A limited budget can be somewhat concerning as our community traffic increases once again.
