Alright, after I lift, I take some Link Removed . This has 50 grams of whey protein isolate and 25 grams of carbs (all from non-sugar sources). Anyways, I was talking to my one friend who said that he heard that it's pointless to ingest more than 18 grams of protein after a workout, because the body can't take in any more than 18 grams. Basically, he says that I am pissing away the other 32 grams of protein and just wasting my money.

Is it true that the body can only take in a limited amount of protein per serving, or is my friend just giving me misinformation? Any insight into this is appreciated.

I've never heard that before and I can't seem to find any information on the web that would confirm this. I would say that you can break up the serving into 2 one hour apart if this is so. Protein is the most easily digestible thing in your diet.

8 isn't enough,

Yeah, I never heard of the 18 gram limit either (until just recently). But if is is true, then doing what you said would probably work out well. This kid I know who gave me the information is also pretty hesitant to take protein as it is, because he was only born with one kidney. I have heard that taking exorbitant amounts of protein will wreck havok on kidneys, so I can see his concern there. But I think he may just be making up the "18 gram limit."

Hmmm, a 30 gram limit. Guess I'll have to do more research on this. 30 grams sounds more logical, than 18, but then again, I was hoping there wasn't a limit. I'm a small dude as it is, so seeing as there is perhaps a limit, I may be going overkill on the protein.

It's just all of the reading that I've done says you should ingest about 300-400 grams of protein per day if you're lifting. So for instance, since I weigh 150 pounds, I should supposedly take in about 300 grams of protein per day, most likely. If there were a limit, of say 30 grams per hour, then every hour for ten hours, I would have to take in 30 grams of protein. For me, this just seems ridiculous. I mean, it would be much more efficient to take in the protein a couple times a day in larger amounts, instead of worrying about taking it in 10 times a day. I don't know, I guess I'm really confused now, haha.

Maybe I'll just stick with my IsoPure, since it hasn't led me astray so far.

here goes :p

Protein = recovery ;)

The more you use your muscles the more protein it needs.....

A person needs ~0,5 gram of protein per pound in bodyweight.
An active person needs ~1gram of protein per pound of bodyweight....
Hardcore-huge-muthaphucker-bodybuilders sometimes take up to ~3gram of protein per pound :p

I've never heard of a limit... hell no, noone said anything about any kinda limit.... but if there is somehow...

There's 3 kinds of protein.... "fast normal slow" "Whey Egg Kasein(milk)"....

Mix em (About 50% kasein(milk), 25% Whey/egg) and you've got a good shake :)

*Whey is best to take right after hard workouts, in the morning & when you feel a bit weaker.

*Egg-protein is just "normal protein" :p

*Kasein (Milk) Is lovely to take in the morning, at lunch, at dinner, just before bed.. ANYTIME! :-D

I love Kasein protein ;) ;) ;) ;)

(Taking a shake with kasein right before you go to bed will cut down on the katabolic effect during the night, or in other words, the tearing down of muscles) :-D

PROTEIN IS GODS GIFT TO MAN
WATER IS MOTHER EARTHS GIFT TO MAN!

LOVE IT! :-D

Peace out ;)

I've heard the limit is around 25-30 grams. A woman that used to work in the local GNC told me all about it and she said for me to either get Myoplex Lite, or if using the full-strenght shakes to drink about half, wait an hour then finish the rest. I never did really look into it, but I know it is a school of thought in the nutritional world and not something your friend thought of.

How much protein can be digested has been going for a long time, with no one agrreeing. I would suggest taking your daily protein needs divid it by 5 or 6 (being meals). Take one these servings after your workout along with Some Carbs; no fat though.

The reason carbs and no fat is: Carbs will create an insulin spike, the higher the carb is in the glycemic index the bigger the spike. Insulin will help in building muscle mass and putting on body fat. Hence, Protein+Carbs=good. Protein+Carbs+Fat=Bad.

An hour after your work you should have a "normal" meal high in Protein as well.

Cheers

Thanks for all of the replies. I've been wanting to experiment with caseine protein as well, so may give a combinatory protein mixture a try after my current supply of whey is out. I will then make sure I limit the protein intake somewhat (per serving), as suggested.

That is probably sound advice for those that have little trouble controlling their weight. However, I still maintain that individuals such as myself should stick to carbs that are low on the glycemic index.

I would suggest it's one of those things that there is no harm in doing. At worst, it might be an unnecessary hassle, but there should be no negative effects from this practice.

Total BS. I wonder how stupid people can get.
If you are on a normal diet just increase the carbs in this drink.

It might be BS but I bet it would be better to call someone misinformed rather than stupid. I don't think the guy had any bad intentions, just probably read something and interpreted it wrong.......

Any of you guys know where the absorption theory of protein stems from? I might do the internet research when I get the time, which is who knows when, but I am curious.

That there is a limit??? I have no idea. As far as I know, there is no limit to the amount of protein that is digestible at any one time.
