What Is The Average Penis Size?
What is Average Penis Size?... the question so many men want a real answer to. If you are anything like me the phrase "average penis size" can mean many different things and leave you feeling confused about the definitive answer. Looking on-line will make things even more confusing due to the numerous surveys and studies conducted around this issue. I visited every conceivable study the Internet has and picked two studies I felt to be most accurate out of the vast collection of sites.

The Kinsey study is one of the biggest and most famous penis size studies ever done. It was done in 1948 and involved 3,500 college males. I thought this to be a great study with some minor flaws. One being most of the men in the study were white, this is a problem because it leaves doubts about race cross sections. The other being the method of measurement, the subject simply held a white card against their penis and marked their length on the card, which was later measured. Even though this was medically viewed it leaves a large area of error, The Kinsey study concluded the average erect length was 6.21 inches and the average erect girth was 4.85 inches. Average Flaccid length was found to be 3.89 inches and flaccid girth 3.75 inches on average.

Other studies fall short of any kind of ethical standard because of method of measurement (Usually done unassisted by the subject). These studies have such a broad element of error that making a conclusion here would be wrong. Men generally will not be honest in these situations due to the inconclusive studies that have spawned unconfirmed rumors of average size. Most men when asked what they believed average size was would say it to be in the 6.5 inch area. So when measuring the penis most will stretch the truth above this point to avoid embarrassment. Statistical surveys and self-perception questionnaires have caused more confusion. Based on the evidence, the answer confirmed is still a cloudy 6 to 6.5 inches. I though this was untrue and a very unfair size for science to conclude, so I continued to search.

The one study I did like most, is Lifestyles Condoms. I think it left the smallest amount of error. In the Spring 2001 in Cancun, Mexico, Lifestyles gathered a total of 301 male volunteers over 18 years old. Each subject was measured by a researcher, which eliminated the cheating factor. The results of the Lifestyles survey found that average penis erect length is 5.87 inches and erect girth is 4.97 inches. Also, according to the survey, 54% of subjects measured between 5.5 inches and 6.3 inches in erect length with 53.3% measuring between 4.72 inches and 5.11 inches in girth. I liked everything in this study but the amount of subjects and the race and penis size inconsistencies.

What I think to be the most definitive answer:
In my opinion, considering all of the information above, I would conclude that the average erect penis measures closer to 5.5 inches than the previously believed 6.5 inches in length. As far as girth is concerned 5 inches is what I believe to be the average. These may be my opinions but I would like to let you know I have studied very closely all surveys of validity and found these numbers to be most unbiased.

I think that wether we are above, below or right smack in the middle of what average is, it gives us a better game plan when the actual number is true. For the person who feels his 5.5" penis is small, this information becomes very relative to him. For the person that falls short of this number, it gives him a solid, realistic goal to work towards. For the men who fall above this number it gives the added confidence we all desperately seek. But in the end, the name of the game is enlargement. The average size will no longer have such strong meaning to you because you will be far from average.

Great post :)

Another wealth of information with several different studies across the globe including new ones

Scroll down to see different ones, as the main one is from 2015 in the UK and it concluded
The average erect penis is, in fact, just over 5 inches long and 4.5 inches thick
which I'm quite surprised at.

...well that explains a lot! Prior to PE I measured in at 6 3/8" bpel and 5.5" mseg and every one of the sexual encounters that made any reference to size classified me as 'big'. My mind never accepted that and that led me to MOS...I guess the majority of us on here have '-start' stats :)

And Amen to lifestyles, The avarage penis is 5,8" nbp and 5" girth in Young men with a Small fatpad. This is college students!

This was an exhaustive study but it shed the light of truth on so many lies. When I was looking for examples of different studies to include in this article I completely avoided any studies that involved self measurement. McKinsey report was a good one when I had access to the actual study. I wish that study was still around because it speaks volumes to why I included Kinsey. The men in that study did self measure But it was done under supervision. And I believe the biggest size in that study was rather normal at around 9 inches in length.

What really got me excited when I found the lifestyles study because it was exactly what we needed, 3500 people of all different walks of life getting measured by nurses so there was no messing with the results. This is how all studies should be done but unfortunately that’s not the case. But this lifestyle study did really help me big time.

I have not searched for a while on this issue but let me search to see if I can find another version of that Kinsey report because it was so thorough including photos of every participant in all kinds of background data.

I would love to see that 9 incher. (no homo)

I would love to see it! The entire study was so well done and it was done in like 1961 around that time. It was so thorough every single patient was photographed with a white card against their penis is showing their size. They drew from all different races and I believe there were a few hundred people in the study. The site they had all this information was just incredible and when I went back to find it it was no longer available.

Kinsey study was great but what was even better was the lifestyles study as that was the only one that was not self measured. But also you should know that I included a lot of data from the various PE forums about starting size.

Take a look at the newer studies in the link I posted, many are not self measured.

But guys the avarage is like 5,8" nbp right? And only like 1 in 100 guys has a dick bigger than 8,5" nbp right?

That's what the NHS information in my country says it says only 1% of men has a penis bigger than 22cm.

Yeah, not many average men will have a large fat pad I suppose. Mine is around 1/2" so I just take it as it is.

In lifestyles study it's really young men like 18 year olds and yeah guys that age likely dont even have 0,5" fatpad probably more like 0,4"

Just need to figure out a way to get it erect, because I have small flaccid

Changing your flaccid size is easy and there’s many ways to do it but the best new way is using the MOS silysleeves as they will hold you at your erect length throughout the day and night so you don’t shrivel and turtle. There are also other things you can do like the testicle health massage and stretch found in the Newbie routine. Another method is using an extender to keep yourself at your best flaccid stretched size. You can also take supplements like Titan that will allow your penis to hang heavier and lower and get better erections. If you have a desk job you can do lazy ass stretches throughout the day. You’ll notice as time goes by your erect size will correspond to your flaccid size relatively.

Thanks dld, I think for me the supplements is the best way. I am just at the limit of being a "meat penis" according the the penimaster pro website guide but it sure does have a large difference between erect vs flaccid. I'm about 4x4 flaccid and I think it will take many years of PE to get a bigger flaccid size!

The supplements definitely help and allow your penis to hang heavier and lower without any effort. But the other things I suggested will work just as well if not better. I would not say it’s gonna take you years to make this happen or else it’ll probably take years to make it happen. This can be done in six months easily. One of the easiest places we can in large the quickest is our flaccid size.

Interesting conclusions from studies in the page I linked

Stretched flaccid length appears to be an excellent estimate of erect penile length
, which for some individuals presenting to clinical settings, may indicate that it may not be necessary to measure erect length as well as flaccid size. However, there was greater variability in the measures, which suggests less reliability. This was found by Chen et al. 30 who reported that a minimal tension force of ≈450 g during stretching of the penis was required to reach a full potential erection length and that the stretching forces exerted by a urologist in their clinical setting were experimentally shown to be significantly less than the pressure required

So when you measure your BPFSL makesure you give it a good stretch :)

Also regarding race and size ...

It is not possible from the present meta‐analysis to draw any conclusions about any differences in penile size across different races. Lynn 31 suggest that penis length and girth are greatest in Negroids (sub‐Saharan Africans), intermediate in Caucasoids (Europeans, South Asians and North African), and smallest in Mongoloids (East Asians), but this is based upon studies that did not meet our present inclusion and exclusion criteria. The greatest proportion of the participants in the present meta‐analysis were Caucasoids. There was only one study of 320 men in Negroids and two studies of 445 men in Mongoloids. There are no indications of differences in racial variability in our present study, e.g. the study from Nigeria was not a positive outlier. The question of racial variability can only be resolved by the measurements with large enough population being made by practitioners following the same method with other variables that may influence penis size (such as height) being kept constant. Future studies should also ensure they accurately report the race of their participants and conduct inter‐rater reliability.

Its what DLD has said for years, and what I, many others seen in locker rooms.

Interesting when measuring ...

If possible, a participant should not have ejaculated in the previous 24 h. Erect measurement may be reported either after self‐stimulation and watching alone or induced by a prostaglandin injection. Further research is required to determine whether erect measurements in naturalistic settings with a sexual partner may be associated with a larger erect measure.

and future work, conclusions ...

The nomograms may be helpful clinically and in research to determine the discrepancy between what a man perceives to be their position on the nomogram and their actual position. Thus, Mondaini et al. 11 found that 48 men (71.7%) with small penis anxiety ‘seemed to be reassured about their normal penile size after a thorough explanation during the visit’. However, 50% of men might interpret being less than average as being defective or abnormal. Comparing one's self or one's attributes against others is a ‘double‐edged sword’ 35 and may confirm perceived inadequacy. It is especially problematic in those with body image problems. Some may understand that by definition, half the population must be below average in a normal distribution. What is not known is if those above the 50th percentile were more likely to be reassured and satisfied than those below the mean and whether those below 50th percentile are more likely to remain anxious or dissatisfied. This could be answered by a randomised controlled trial in which men with BDD or small penis anxiety are randomly allocated to either: (i) being told their percentile measure compared with others or (ii) being told they are in the normal range without being given their percentile.

A nomogram may also be used to investigate the tendency for humans to view themselves as better than average (self‐enhancement) and to hold a positive bias for socially valued dimensions 36, 37. Thus, one might hypothesise that men without any concerns about their penile size have ‘rose‐tinted glasses’ and estimate their size to be larger than they actually are on a nomogram. However, this remains to be investigated. Furthermore, men with penis size anxiety or BDD may have lost their ‘rose‐tinted glasses’. In addition, such men are likely to believe that others think that they should be larger. If this hypothesis were accepted, then the finding could contribute to tailoring of the psycho‐education of men with small penis anxiety.

An important observation also comes from Lever et al. 38 who found in a large internet survey of 52 031 heterosexual men and women, 85% of women were satisfied with their partner's penis size, but only 55% of the men were satisfied with their own penis size. Thus, only 15% of women say that erect penis size is important and erect girth is generally more important than length 39. It is not known how many of the 15% of women were also partnered with a man who also thought he was too small. Such preferences may also be different in the homosexual community.

Measurement of penile size is of course only one aspect of assessment of men with small penis anxiety or a micropenis. Equally as important is male genital image satisfaction 40-42; an understanding of the beliefs and attitudes about penile size 43; the frequency of avoidance and safety seeking behaviours to prevent the risk of shame or humiliation 1 and the need to screen for BDD either by a questionnaire 44, 45 or structured diagnostic interview 46. This is because helping a man with BDD may require a more complex psychiatric intervention 47-49 than for those with small penis anxiety without BDD, where psycho‐education and counselling may be helpful 50, 51. However, those hypotheses are beyond the scope of the present paper and require randomised controlled trials with standardised scales and long‐term follow up.
