Vietnam executes 5 mobsters

"Vietnam's notorious crime 'godfather' Nam Cam and four of his gang members were executed by firing squad Thursday after being convicted in a major crackdown on an empire of vice, bribery and murder that reached into the ruling Communist Party. The five were shot at dawn at the Long Binh execution grounds in Ho Chi Minh City... The government's ruthless prosecution of Nam Cam, whose real name is Truong Van Cam, was intended to send a message against rampant corruption and crime. His trial exposed close ties between the Vietnamese mafia and members of the Communist Party, embarrassing a leadership that has prided itself on its anti-corruption stance. Last year's trial was the country's largest criminal case ever, with a total of 155 defendants including police officers and senior government officials."
