I am going to be looking for a career as a firefighter, and I was just wondering what kind of training I should do to become really fit for it. I am going to be doing a basic bulk watching my calories very carefully and doing weight training on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. I am also wondering about when I should do cardio, if I do to much then I won't make many muscle gains which I would also like. Would it be best to do cardio on Tuesdays and Thursdays and rest on the weekends?

I have a while to till I try out, I am currently 140lbs with about 9-10% bf, I would like to get to 190lbs with about 7-8% bf.

Well as you may know I had just over 2 years expertise in the service ... with Mancheser fire dept http://www.manchesterfire.gov.uk/
Now I am training to be a Police Officer , not sure if I shall stick it .... seeing if its for me at the moment.
Anyways ....... to be a fireman to be a fireman lol ya gotta be quite fit but not as fit some think/reckon.
Lift/pull/drag/push certain weights, bleep tests, tests to see if ya scared of closed spaces, carry a peson of the same sex as you, same weight [mostly] up a long stair case ... you have to reach the top in a certain time with this person over ya back.
Its EASYER than it sounds, they learn you to distribute weight even on your body so lifting becomes easy.

Shit I gone of topic here lol you want fitness hahhahaha

Okay.... all I did/do still today is this.

Everyday: Do some cycleing ... no set distance, just non-stop for 1 hour .... I do go for ages however....but do as much as you like.
Also jogging eachday around a park/field for say 1 hour non-stop.
Get on a rowing machine and do 30/45 minutes non-stop rowing at 45 RPS on medium to hard setting .... no breaks, its the BEST Cardo exercise .. and all body.
Does everything rowing, infact exercises the legs better than jogging does some say, and I agree.

Finally swim when you can, say weekend each week or bi-weekly .... just another good cardo exercise, its ALL CARDIO.

Anotherthing is practice sit-ups and push-ups.
Aim to do 50 of each in 2 minutes non - stop ....

No weight training is needed, just get ya CARDIO up very high and you be fine.

Also afer say 2/4 weeks of doing most of the above daily, switch to 1 on 1 off ... and carry on doing that.

Cool, I too am thinking of joining the service, is it hard to get a job in the fire service or is it like the army, also, what happens if you have been charged with a criminal offense, I have heard that if you have ever been charged you cannot become a police officer, is this the same for the fire dept?
I am going to the job centre this week so I'll get some info.

Its harder to get in than the Royal Army, infact only 1 in 30 gets in.
Dont let that put ya off, if ya want it you'll get in.
Criminal offenses, well I would say it depends on what you were charged with .... with any job if you have a conviction it wont do you many favours, but if you can prove yav changed than its a good start ..... and as far as I can remember the Fire Service doesnt do what the Police do and have a ban on peeps with convictions.

I would also rec' you to look up your LOCAL fire dept website, for example myn was Greater Manchester ... it should have details on WHEN they are recruiting and they ONLY do this like twice a year in some places and take SMALL numbers , like 10 from 100's of applications.
Do a check on the local site it will tell you more.
