ive noticed that when i lift, regardless of whether im doin chest, biceps, triceps, pretty much anything upper body, since my left side is weaker, it tends to use other muscles to support. mainly i feel extra tenstion in my left trap. i dont know if this has to do with form or what but please help...im really tryin ot get some symmetry

emphasize on your form until you feel comfortable with the weight,or u might need to take some weight off.its all about form and intensity.

Well since your left side is weaker initially it will have to use other muscles to stabilize (this is assuming of course your form on both sides is equal). Eventually this side will become your limiting factor for increasing weight and then will catch up to the right, and then you will be able to progress again. Just make sure you're keeping equal form/balance, etc. on both sides and they should balance out over time. Good luck!
