Schwarzenegger suddenly opposes unpopular proposal

"Amid outcry from animal rights groups across the country, Gov. Schwarzenegger on Friday changed his mind about trying to repeal a state law that requires animal shelters to wait up to six days before euthanizing stray cats and dogs. 'I realized last night that there was a mistake that I made on the budget,' Schwarzenegger said at a late-afternoon news conference at the Capitol. In an effort to curb spending, Schwarzenegger had asked the Legislature to repeal a 6-year-old state law that made adoption, not euthanization, the top priority for county- and city-run animal shelters."
