This is inspired by the TV shows thread. Post your favorite films here. If its obscure, tell a bit about it, like the director, year, genre, etc. Also if any movie has especially good music, say that (I'm studying film scoring in college). Also if the movie has a particularly gorgeous actress (I don't mean the modern fake Britney Lopez or Christina Jolie. I mean like Audrey Hepburn, Terri Garr, Madeline Kahn, Grace Kelly, Elizabeth Hurley...yum). A few of my favorites are:

Life is Beautiful
Doctor Zhivago
Vertigo
Psycho
Casablanca
To Catch a Thief
The Pianist
The Nightmare Before Christmas
Dead Poets Society
Citizen Kane
The Matrix (the first one)
Moulin Rouge
Final Fantasy (especially the score...Eliot Goldenthal is the man!)
Star Wars (the original 3)
Jurassic Park (all 3, but especially #1)
Young Frankenstein
History of the World, part 1
Robin Hood: Men in Tights (can you tell I'm a Mel Brooks fan?)
Monty Python's Holy Grail
Oh Brother Where Art Thou?
The Shawshank Redemption
Much Ado About Nothing (the one with Michael Keaton)
Gladiator
Lord of the Rings (all 3)

Those were in no particular order. Post away!

Un Homme et Une Femme: Dir. Claude Lelouch 1964

La Belle et Le Bete: Dir. Jean Cocteau 194? (Nazi-occupied Paris; you'd never know it from the film: this movie has been visually copied so often as to make it almost a cliche)

8 1/2: Federico Fellini

Sanjuro
Yojimbo
Ran
all by Akira Kurosawa

Manhattan: Woody Allen

Two of the best modern films are both Roman Polanksi's: Rosemary's Baby and Chinatown (the score of which, Cyclops, is perfect)

Recent films that I admired are Swimming Pool (starring Charlotte Rampling, a 'most beautiful' woman ever in film: see Georgy Girl); Lost in Translation; the Ring Trilogy; and The Royal Tenenbaums (a terrific soundtrack).

Also:

American Graffiti
Desk Set
A Hard Day's Night
Seven
12 Monkeys
Anniversary Party
FIGHT CLUB
Erin Brockovich

Another 'most beautiful' actress: Julie Christie. See Darling directed by John Schlesinger, and Doctor Zhivago (David Lean) from the same year. And Shampoo.

(I just discovered Columbo on television.)

A couple more

A Clockwork Orange
Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf?
Performance
Run Lola Run
Nashville

Braveheart
Last of the Mohicans
Oceans 11

Some you reminded me of.

David...you're a foreign film guy? Sweet. I never was until recently, so I don't really know which ones to get. That gives me a good start. Thanks. And yeah, isn't Julie Christie gorgeous? The first time I saw her was in Doctor Zhivago. Stunning. Which reminds me:

Fahrenheit 451

BTW RED, one of my teachers was the music editor for Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. He worked a lot with Michael Kamen (the composer, who just died a few months ago unfortunately...he was only in his 50s). The teacher's name is Eric Reasoner. You'll see his name in the credits. He worked on a bunch of other films as a music editor. Die Hard 3, Lethal Weapon 3 and 4, Swing Kids...some others.

About to watch Silence of the Lambs...good stuff. Anthony Hopkins is such a great actor.

Fahrenheit 451 was actually a foreign film: directed by Francois Truffaut, and I think was his first English-language film. (I love that movie and Christie is terrific in the dual roles.) Truffaut made The 400 Blows and was a major participant of the French new wave of cinema in the 50s. You might recognize him as the French 'scientist' in Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

Yeah, I love movies.

Boogie Nights? (nobody mentions that? I thought this was Penis Enlargement message board) LMAO
Taxi driver
Midnight Cowboy (Have to have dreams truly squashed to appreciate it)
City of God (brazillian film-fucking raw-based on a true strory of teenage street gangs)
Kingpin
Blazing Saddles (I wish they could still make a comedy this un p.c. today)
Bad santa (Pretty un-p.c. but no blazing saddles)
Kill Bill
Pulp Fiction
Reservior Dogs
The big Lebowski ("this is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass"
Silence of the lambs
The Naked Gun
The Color of Money
The Killing (Stanley Kubrick 1956 film noir uses a Tarantino non linear structure
Rear Window
Psycho
The Toxic Avenger
Class of nuk'em high
They live
The Wicker Man (Brutal ending)
Color of Money
American Movie (Documentary on joe scHydromaxo tying to make a film)
Bowling for Columbine
The Shining
Trading Places
Raging Bull
12 monkeys
Time Bandits (How can you go wrong with six british dwarfs on the run)Wally!!

Storytelling
Rocky1-4
Casino
Punch Drunk Love (Adam sandler actually acts)
Cruising (Al pacino goes under cover as a gay sex fiend to catch a serial killer-worth it just for seeing pacino dancing like a mad man in a hardcore gay bar) LMAO

The kid stays in the picture (actually listen to the book on tape, its better)

I guess that's enough for now....Damn I watch alot of movies...guess that's why I'm gonna make it a career

Need to see more foreign films though...I haven't seen enough yet...Please list some of the better ones.

Yeah, I love movies.

Oh yeah man that was a great film. Good book too.

Turk, your post reminded me of some. Simone...not an incredibly good film, but much overlooked IMO (and just came on, on Starz Theater {and I love the way the score starts with a choral arrangement of Barber's Adagio for Strings}), and I love Al Pacino's acting. And Scent of a Woman was great too. What are you doing in film? If you ever need a composer, I'm your man, right? LMAO Seriously, though...if you ever are looking for one, drop me a PM.

I am just gonna drop a few in:

Seven(the best)
Apocalypse Now
American History X
Magnolia(great)
LOTR all 3
Raging bull
Big Lebowsky
Trainspotting
Last of the Mohicans
Mullholand drive (Lynch is a genius)

The list could go on forever

Seems Seven and Sharshank R''' are the top ones.
SEVEN is the best chiller ever made, it hammers silence of the lambs IMHO which isnt as good as Hannibal, I thought SOTL was somewhat over-rated, but still very good indeed......just lacks its long lasting appeal to me, I have seen it 4 times compared to hannibal ... I seen it 10 times and will watch it again, the music is also FANTASTIC, great Italian opera.

Yeah RED the SOTL is great. It is the best of the trilogy. I didn't like the Red Dragon at all. I was quite dissapointed. Well I see that you are on the board. Did you watch the Reds game on Tuesday. Man it sucks they fell out of the game. They were very close.

Yep I sAw it ... was DEVASTATED MAN.
1 MINUTE TO GO and them portugal bastards lol score
Damn, it should never have been a freekick, they were DIVING all night long, bastards .... robbing bastards.
We had a perfect onside goal disallowed, Its a sham.
Utd's USA goalkeeper wasnt to blame for that goal, he made a GREAT save I think, but the rebound was to quick and close.

Man Utd were robbed plain and simple, we won if that goal wasnt dis-allowed.
Now Europe is GONE.
We wont win the League , we are too far behind now....its the FA cup, and thats gunna be hard cos we got Arsenal who are VERY GOOD.

turkzilla:

Thanks for mentioning Punch Drunk Love: that is a great film that seems to have been overlooked. The role was written for Sandler (Isn't this Paul Thomas Anderson: Magnolia: Boogie Nights?) and he is terrific and the actress who plays his sister (name?) has an amazing time with a small role.

What aspect of filmmaking are you pursuing?

Fuck those referees man, that goal was legal man. No way that was an offside. It showed perfectly in slo-mo. It's a shame man. I love Reds. Now it's just the damn Spaniards and the Italian macaronies in the league. This sucks.
And that Carlos dude was fuckin' diving all the game.
It's a shame, but every club has it's ups and downs. I think that Ruud is not in the top form.

I'll get it back on track...

I consider myself quite the film buff, so I'll just include a few from all sorts of genres that are personal favorites (otherwise I'd post for hours):

Frenzy
Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind
Gaslight
Vanishing Point
The 3rd Man
Citizen Kane
Lawrence of Arabia
The Conversation
Groundhog Day
L.A. Confidential
Straw Dogs
The Wild Bunch
Shane
Ride the High Country
Casino
Heat
An American Werewolf in London
