If you are going to do it after your wife goes to sleep, make sure to have a light on to see the color of your cock. Made that mistake once and overdid it because I couldnt see the color. Have been fighting with the purple penis ever since. :)

I have personally learned over the years, through trial and error. It's not how intense you go with clamping, but more about time under pressure. Clamping is 'intense' enough for most men. A huge step up usually in intensity from manual exercises. It's hard to imagine the difference until you actually try clamping vs using your hands or some make shift band, or string, or whatever around your penis. There really is no comparison to using an actual clamp and then following a guided clamping example routine.
