Japan reminded of its WMD atrocities
News Corporation |
"An atrocity committed on an Australian pilot is about to reawaken controversy over a little-known aspect of the Imperial Japanese Army's World War II campaigns - its chemical weapons. A new book, published in Tokyo today, tells of the gruesome deaths of RAAF Flight Lieutenant Arthur Douglas Nelson and a Dutch flier, who were used as guinea pigs to test the potency of cyanide gas... The little-known incident was a rare documented case of Japan - the only combatant known to have used chemical warfare in World War II - using poison gas outside the Manchuria campaign... Lieutenant-Colonel Hideo Kondo ordered the men gassed to test cyanide gas the division had been carrying around since 1941. Lieutenant Yoshimo Iwasaki threw gas canisters at the feet of the captives, they collapsed and were killed with bayonets."
