Changing my diet has been pretty big for me. The running is helping as well. I'm looking bigger when I'm erect so I'm at least losing fat from what I can see. It's that middle age thing. Men get "skinny fat" where they're skinny everywhere except their belly.

I need to start eating clean but I love food too much :)

fat begins to store within the muscle, once that space is saturated it starts building-up outside it (sub-cutaneous). perhaps the abs you're seeing are real, but the fat is contained within

Last week I went for a 4k run and came in under 22 minutes. I was super happy with that and on my way to beat 28 minutes which is my personal goal. I went on a 5k run yesterday and just barely squeaked under 30 minutes. However I almost twisted my ankle on the run due to the terrain (shitty sidewalks and a grass section that sucked). I was fighting the pain to keep going and could tell it slowed me down because halfway through I was breathing fine. I'd try pushing myself harder to where I'd be breathing really hard and my ankle and shins held me back.

I also had both shins wrapped from ankle to 1/4 of my calves as I've had some shin pain from running. That made my shins hurt more while running. All my other runs they weren't wrapped and I was okay. I won't be wrapping them my next few runs.

I'm not running today. After this I've got 5 days to be ready for this 5k. I think Monday I'm doing sprints, Wednesday another full 5k, then Friday I'll do a short "shakedown" run to make sure I feel okay (2k jog with a few sprints while jogging along).

I think I can pull a 27 minute time, maybe better.

They are real but distorted and the fat underneath is what is making them so visible. Nothing attractive in the least!

My belly is kinda funny looking. When I get up in the morning I'll usually have a "4 pack" at the top of my belly. Below that you can't see the muscle and I've still got a little bulge of fat I need to lose.

I'm getting there slowly but surely. I don't need washboard abs but I'd like my belly to be mostly flat again.

I think this may just be the way things turn out when you grow older. The fat pad I have is separate than my belly, there is a division between the two when it used to be one. I am going to try to get to 175 again and see where the fat pad is then. I would be depressed if I was with a woman but I am not right now, thank God. I really dislike this fat pad and it really reduces my flaccid size. Well, I guess it is a good thing to never run out of work :)

I've always been built that way but the extra fat needs to go. Last time I was at the doctor I was 175lbs. I may need to get down to 160-165lbs to flatten my belly.

I'm a short 5'6" and while I'm not extremely stocky I do have a good bit of muscle on me frame. I was just under 150lbs a few years ago and I looked really thin. The weight isn't a real concern for me though, it's how I carry it that matters to me. If I stayed 175lbs and my belly was flat I'd be happy. I want my 32" pants to feel a little loose again so I don't need to buy new clothes lol

My openly gay coworker asked me yesterday if running makes your ass bigger and said mine looks a little larger in a good way. I told him my pants are getting a little looser on my waistline since I'm eating better and getting some exercise in so maybe my ass isn't getting bigger but the rest of me is getting slimmer. I'd love to see him lose a little weight too. I've tried to encourage him a bit to eat a better and take care of himself a bit. Hopefully he listens someday. He's one of the few people I'd be friends with outside of work if we didn't work together.

Doesn't bother me that he was checking out my ass. Hell I took it as a compliment. That's where it ends though cause I'm not into guys.

I would do anything, even surgery if I could afford it, to get a bigger ass! Having no ass is so fucking uncomfortable.

Squats. Lots and lots of squats. Deadlifts and hamstring exercises will also help build your glutes. If you build some muscle there it's far better than just fat alone.

I'm on target to meet my goal of under 28 minutes provided I don't get hurt. My ankle got a little tweaked the other day but I ran this morning and felt okay. Shins are hurting a bit as well but I'm going to take 800mg of ibuprofen before the 5k and stretch my shins far better than I have been. Anything under 28 minutes on this 5k (3.1 miles) is just icing on the cake.

If you've read my posts you know I can really tell a story. This one is about my 5k. If you want to skip to the last 2 paragraphs I'll understand. That's where my results are. Everything else is just Grade A Story Telling.

The only times I've really run was when I was in the Marine Corps. I was used to formation runs and our 3 mile timed run being surrounded by men. This was totally different because there was a mix of men and women.

A week ago I slightly twisted my ankle on a run. I had set out for a full 5k, first time on a distance run day, and it hampered me to the point that it took 30 minutes. It was bothering me on and off all week so I was really worried about it. Even before the run I could feel it when I stepped certain ways. I attempted wrapping it but it made it worse since I was losing flexibility. Instead I took 800mg of ibuprofen before leaving the house to calm it down. It helped a lot.

We got to the starting area in a sea of people and they sounded the official start. I took off pretty damn fast, for me anyway, trying to get my way through the crowd and get some open space. It was an insane dash of zigzagging everywhere. After the first Km I had open room and I remembered what my boss had told me - find a hot ass running a little faster than you and follow it.

I see 1 in front of me and I'm happily catching it. Then I realize I'm moving faster than her and I pass. I see another up ahead and start heading for it. It's a decent ass and I stick behind it for about 2 minutes, far enough behind that it's not creepy. Mind you I have sunglasses on so it's not obvious I'm looking.

Then I see a smoking hot ass and legs with blonde hair. I stayed behind this one the longest. I'm pushing really hard to stay about 8-10 feet behind. All of the sudden my competitive nature kicks in and my legs find another gear. I start trying to pick up my pace slightly, which to this point I have been slowing down, and we end up side by side for a minute or so before I finally pull ahead.

Now I'm totally in it for myself and my overall time which was my original goal. There's no hot asses ahead, just the finish. Through my earbuds I hear "4km, average speed..." etc. from my smart watch. I know shit is about to get real as I was told the last part of this 5k is a long hill. I'm trying to keep my pace while also leaving something in reserve for this hill.

Get to the bottom of it and didn't dare look up. I remembered seeing it when we pulled in. I've driven up this hill before and it didn't seem bad. My pace remained strong, I passed a guy at the halfway point of this hill only to have him pass me 30 seconds later. My quads are on fire now, my lungs feel ready to explode, my whole body is screaming "WHY?! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS?!"

Finally hit the top and I know this is it, I'm almost there, as soon as I enter the stadium it's a half lap to the finish. I thought as this point I'd hit the "common sense override" switch and pour every last ounce of energy into running but the hill took it completely out of me.

Finally crossed the line and I see the clock. It's reading 26:16. I see my boss who's cheering for me cause he knew my goal was to be under 28. Then I remember we were using "official" timing. Your time doesn't start until you cross the start line.

Official time was 25:57. I destroyed my goal of being under 28 minutes. This is what 5 weeks of work has gotten me. 20 years ago in the USMC my 3 mile run times were in the 24-25 minute range and this was 3.1 miles. To be able to get myself close to those times again at 40 is just awesome.

Overall I was 57th out of over 400. There were a lot of walkers since this was a cancer benefit. The top few runners had 16 and 18 minute times which is insane and I'll never be that fast. I'm not done though, gonna keep up the running and see if I can find another 5k in a few months and test myself again. For now I'm just really sore but feel good knowing I crushed that shit and I can get faster from here.

Actually.....

I just remembered this. A 5k is a 3.1 mile run and my USMC timed runs were 3 miles. The official time also broke it down into mile times. I was running 8:22 average mile times. That means at the 3 mile mark I would've been at 25:06.

So I'm 100% back to the times I was running 20 years ago! To do that at 40, almost 41, with just a few weeks of training is unreal to me.

I think I just got my 3rd wind. Back to running tomorrow!
