You've taken a picture with your new digital camera, done a capture from a webcam, or scanned a photograph. Now the image is on your computer and you'd like to post it here. This message is for you.

The following presumes you are running some version of Windows or NT. I've been away from Macs for several years. Perhaps someone will add info for Mac users.

Step One

First, check the file extension and size of your image file. Right click on the file and select Properties. It needs to be .jpg or .gif and the size shouldn't be over approximately 150K. Smaller is better. Unfortunately, many image programs included with cameras and scanners don't save files in sizes or formats suitable for use on a webpage. Don't despair if yours is out of whack. It's easily remedied.

Ok, it's not right. Now what?

Download Irfanview, a free image viewer/manipulator. Use it to open your image. With Irfanview you can crop your picture, resize it, and save it to a different format.

Cropping

If the picture is off-center or contains unnecessary space around the object of attention, crop it.

Left click somewhere on the image and drag the mouse while holding the button down. See how you can drag the box out? To clear the box click somewhere else on the image.

1) Drag the box to enclose the area you wish to include in your picture.
2) Click on Edit, then Crop Selection. The picture will trim to the area you selected.

Resizing

Do this if your picture is too large, meaning it appears too big in your browser.

Click on the Image menu and select Resize/Resample. A window will pop up.

Here you have various options for resizing your image. I usually use "Set new size as percentage of original." Type in the desired percentage.

Reduce your image according to how big it was to begin with. Try 80%, 70%, or cut it down to 50%. You can undo your previous change by selecting Undo from the Edit menu.

Once your image is sized as you wish it to appear, select Save As from the File menu. Either save it as GIF or JPG. Gif will probably be smaller. After saving the file check the new size. Either right click on it and select Properties, or open it in Irfanview and select Information under the Image menu.

Changing the file type

Do this if the image is at your chosen dimensions, but the file size is too big.

See the last paragraph above. .Bathmatep and other large files will shrink drastically when converted to .gif or .jpg. If changing the compression scheme doesn't knock the size down enough, resize the image first.

I am not new, I have been on forums since 1998. Sorry if you felt my pics were too large. My screen res is 1600x1200. Also, I have the same pics posted at Thunders, and no one said anything about the size.

Nice guide though.

Well another thing to consider dork...oops, Dark, is that images like yours that hog up the whole screen and take 4 minutes to load...lose interest quickly and most people will not sit therre and wait for the pic to open all the way. Not to mention it is just plain annoying.

Very nice, resorting to calling names.

Anyways, I don't really care, DLD should just put size restrictions on attachments, so then people don't have to cry about a large picture. Problem solved.

dude, he's just telling people how to make their pictures smaller, and the right format in case they want people to be able to look at their pictures, not setting rules to ban people with, or whatever your implying.
