Farmer fined $5,500 for dragging death
News 24 South Africa |
"The judge who fined a farmer R36,000 for killing a worker by dragging him alongside his bakkie until he fell under its wheels, has rejected an application to appeal against the sentence... Maritz, of Elmboog farm near Komatipoort, dragged worker Jotham Mandlazi alongside his bakkie until he fell under its wheels, crushing his head, on February 8 last year. Maritz was punishing Mandlazi for not arriving at work that day, but Judge Els said the two clearly had a good relationship because Mandlazi had felt comfortable enough to ask Maritz for a cigarette moments before the incident. He fined Maritz R36,000 and gave a two-year suspended sentence on a charge of culpable homicide in the Nelspruit circuit of the high court in February this year."
