Fake sleepwalker convicted of murder
KGTV 10 San Diego |
"A jury yesterday convicted Stephen Reitz of first-degree murder, rejecting the Coronado man's defense that he was sleepwalking when he stabbed and beat his married girlfriend to death in a hotel room on Catalina Island. The verdict came after nearly two days of deliberations in the slaying of Eva Marie Weinfurtner, 42, of Coronado, a jewelry artist. She had joined Reitz on a 2001 weekend getaway to the island city of Avalon... Jurors agreed with the trial's prosecutor, Deputy District Attorney Ken Lamb, that the nature of the attack was in conflict with someone being unconscious. It involved striking the victim in the head with a large flower pot, twisting her arm and fracturing her wrist, beating her so severely that she had several fractured ribs and stabbing her with a pocket knife."
