Yup thats right. Recycling can be bad for the enviornment. To break it down as simple as possible, recycling costs too much.

Recycling dosent save energy, it increases energy consumption in transporting sorting, cleaning, and storing. It wastes more energy recycling a pastic bottle, then to just make a new one. It costs the average city $50-60/ton to throw away garbage. But it costs 3x as much to recycle it, a whopping $150/ton.

Reclycling pastic and paper is counterproductive. Paper is farmed on tree farms, so we have an endless supply of wood. Its not like people are cutting down rain forest for paper. We have 3x as many trees than in 1920.

But landfills are going to run out and drown America in trash and filth! Nope. Americans make about 220 million tons of trash per year. But the truth is, we have enough space for the next 100,000 years. Once landfills are filled, most of them are covered and turned into a golf course, or park. And the methane gas generated is collected and used to power homes.

Recycling isn't bad for EVERY town and city, but this applies to most, or almost all. And one more note. Recycling aluminum Works. It costs less to recycle aluminum, than to make a new one. So it works, and I think glass works too, but I'm not 100 percent.

It costs $8 billions dollars per year to fund recycling. But the true cost can be hidden due to government subsidies. But on the other hand we give some farmers $300 BILLION per year to grow/sell crops that dont grow/sell very well.

Isn't it amazing how much the government pisses away tax-payer's money?

Never did recycle;on purpose anyway. What's the point, we're going to die soon one way or another. It's simpler to send all of the garbage to the moon, along with all the Green-Peace fanatics.

Nexus once again your posts show that you are a critical thinker. Most people don't question things like this, or they just find facts that support what they already believe and disregard everything else.

Btw I am a libertarian, atheist, pro-nuclear power, pro-development, transhumanist, pe-er!;).

Recycling is something that makes the masses 'feel' good. It makes them feel like they are making a difference and their government is trying. Meanwhile 10 miles down the road they are clearcutting and strip mining everything. But most people never go outside of their city, so politically you work on the city's environment:). That is the recycling rational from the 'powers that be'.

Excellent stuff Nexus and Randolf. My head spins at the stupidity of the American people and the shit they will swallow in their never ending pursuit of easy "feel good" nirvana.
Of all the social "corrective" issues that turn my stomach forced recycling is at the top - (aside from banning smoking in the most ridiculous places (bars?), which IMO indicates the end of civilization is at hand).

As Nexus points out, it defies logic. Paper is an infinitely renewable resource - it is akin to recycling corn husks and wastes more energy, causes more pollution, costs more money, and drains more of the precious personal time people have left when they're not busy working nearly the first five months of the year for Uncle Sam.

In my town, it is the law that you must not only recycle paper products - but glass!! Fucking GLASS!!
Do people need a chemistry degree to understand the properties of glass? Has it occurred to anybody busy scraping the glue labels off of jelly jars for half an hour on trash night that what they are doing is completely idiotic?

I once spent forty-five minutes one night (strictly to please my gullible wife) cutting up cardboard boxes, neatly stacking them, and wrapping them in string and wouldn't you know it the next morning I came out to find the stack of cardboard left untouched on the curb with a bright red "warning" sticker that said I was in violation of recycling laws because the string I used was not made of a natural fiber!
The fucks.

I called the hack director of recycling (make work job) and told him he better come pick that pile of shit off my curb or he would regret it. He of course got smart and hung up so I took the pile of cardboard, wrapped it in brown packaging paper, took it down to my local post office and mailed it to my fuck head Mayor with a note inside thanking him for his great service and since he considered this cardboard pile so valuable it was my hope that he might accept it as a contribution to his upcoming campaign.

He never got back to me, but he was re-elected in a landslide. I feel that I was somehow responsible for that and I'm not proud of myself.
