Ersatz prison clubhouse discovered

"State prison officials are investigating how prisoners on work details built what was described as an underground 'hang out' outside an Upstate prison. The partially buried lean-to was discovered Friday outside the perimeter fence of Tyger River Correctional Institution near Enoree in Spartanburg County, said Charles Sheppard, inspector general for the state Department of Corrections. Investigators found a weight bench, blue jeans and tennis shoes inside... The back of the structure had a dirt berm so guards inside the medium-security prison couldn't see it, he said, and was open on one end. It was built with scrap lumber by inmates on work crews brought from Columbia to work on fences, he said."
