Maybe it's just the area I live in, but it's hard to find a good job out there! I mean, this is America! Supposedly the land of opportunity!

Anyway, I've got a few years of experience as a Network/Computer Support Technician and can't seem to find a job anywhere. I've been sending out my resume like crazy and haven't even gotten a phone call. This is getting very frusterating.

I wish I could just get a job the old fashioned way(networking) but all my friends work 6/hr jobs at walmart and the like. My family is a bunch of bums, lol.

This sucks, and I'm mad

I'm unemployed at the moment, it sucks big time. I just sent in an application to BT (British Telecom - Huge Company), to work with network designing. Hopefully I will get it as working with BT will be very good for my future.

Good Luck in getting a job.

I'm 21 and have some college behind me. College really isnt for me though.

I do have years of experience working with computers and technical training in engineering design(completed a year training program through Northrop Grumman).

Could be the area I live in. You're lucky to find a job that pays over 30k/year, even with a degree.

Its WORSE in the UK mate.
NO FUCKING GOOD CAREERS HERE FULL STOP.
Its all dead end jobs and you gotta have a degree to be in a good job, I am also un-employed [you all know why] but I plan over the months to either move into the Military or the Police.
Its a career, stable that the normal non snotty block can get into.

Over here all the immagrants take our jobs [ANGRY] so we the UK peeps are left with the scraps.

Two important things that really help you getting hired is your level of neatness. People love that shit. If you were in TV or film for example and took a class in one of these and kept your production book for that semester be sure to bring it on an interview. My Professor has a doctorate from NYU and got hired just on his production book by ABC in America just on that.

Another thing is your demeanor. Nervous people often get passed over. The better you hold yourself together the more they will like you.

People put a huge weight on one's appearence. if your overweight you have a harder time getting hired. People prejudge you and that happens all the time.

Sometimes a neat bullshit artist can get anywhere in life by a calm presentation and a lot of order to what they do, even if they are mediocre in skills.

Sometimes you just have to move.

Where I live, there are a few good colleges, but no real economy. No high end jobs whatsoever. So usualy, after college, everyone moves away ( at least the ones who didnt move away already when they went to college). They call it The Brain Drain. And within this location and culture, I dont see that changing anytime soon.

I know what you mean, but sometimes you have to go where the jobs are. They wont come to you.

Something Ive seen a lot of lately is municipalities looking for IT people. They are all switching to email, electronic bidding and websites. Not to mention all those old school workers are pretty lame on computer skills. The pay tends to be a bit low but the benefits are really good. And you'll get ALL those friggin holidays!!!

Who knows, but dont look in the paper go there its much better they might not have an opening per sey but they might find a spot for you.

Have you checked with employment staffing services and similar businesses? Have you tried online sources? Have you posted your resume online?

Also, does your resume suck? I mean, have you had anyone take a good, critical look at it?

Are you sending out cover letters with your resumes? Do these cover letters utilize the impact method? If your cover letter sucks, your resume will not even be read. If you have no cover letter, you will not make as strong of an impression.

All of this is exponentially more important in a shitty economy. Our national economy is rebounding, but the suckass local areas are not going to change much. For example, Pittsburgh sucks for jobs. If you don't bring your "A game" to the job market here, you're not going to get a good job here, regardless of how much the rest of the country might be growing.
