The skin near the base of my gear is tender from tight cock ring last night. Tonight I can't put it in the same spot. Is it dumb to have the ring higher up but still near the base?

Rings higher up on the shaft can be not-useless if there is also a ring lower on the base too, but yeah almost always it'd be dumb to not have the ring as low on the base as possible. .. Even going so far as to reset its position even lower than is possible when first putting it on by doing several repetitions of kegeling in blood and pushing/maneuvering the ring lower and lower on the base (with the kegeled blood helping to keep it waaay down and tight at the bottom.)

If it's roughing you up too much, .. go for less time, or less intensity, or more rest periods and/or massageouts, or a different ring design or ring material, or slightly bigger size, .. and help the skin heal faster between sessions with skin-healing oils such as extravirgin coconut oil, or Emu oil, or Argan oil. (There's fake Argan around so get that one from a top-rated brand.)

Also, you wouldn't do this for sex but it can be useful for PE sessions, .. you might mess around with some manner of cushioning/underlayment beneath the cockring to spread and cushion its force. It will still occlude just as well (or even better) with cushioning, if the setup will stay where you put it on the base. Whether or not it will depends on the materials being tried and the design and/or material of the ring (steel, silicone, whatever).

The cushioning materials help the ring itself to be less 'bruisey' to the shaft, but they can also irritate and abrade the skin in a whole different way - from imprinting, or from being too 'grippy', or whatever, so lol look out for any new problems with that too. But once you come up with a good system and know what to expect from it, it's all butter.

Top poster above me has solid advice.

I find that silicone rings are much harsher on the skin then a proper fitted steel ring and don't work as well for me personally. If your whole shaft is sore try using a behind the balls cock ring. I find they change The base placement and can sometimes get you even closer to the base.

Can I ask what are using the cock ring for? Sex, After Girth workout, All day cock ring? each one might call for a different ring for best results.

What would be the benefits of a behind the balls ring compared to putting it above the balls?

Really no benefits, it's more person dependent and preference on what works best for them. I think ring shape and type like a myhardwear, or material used Should be a factor as well for optimal results. That is also person dependent.

I'd say most people that have done both swear that it works better behind the balls in keep blood trapped better. I agree that it works better and can keep it fat pump all day behind the balls. Most people that use an all day cock ring, do this as well have said it's given best gains. If I use just shaft I loose it in a couple hours. Behind the balls I can keep a very flush flaccid all day. Others don't like it and complain of pain, feeling weird. I feel for me it at least during sex it delays ejaculation much more efficiently. And if it'd a hardwear adjust type the hardest erections of my life.

For say after pumping and sex Shaft wise a silicone works fine during sex and most pleasant for most partners, cause steel is cold and hard. But I find silicone aren't as good as proper fitting steel ring for retaining post Girth work out as a proper fitted steel. For me rubber silicone cause irritation and that leads to bad turtling and rubs me raw.

Ohh man that's interesting. when i get a cock ring i will definitely use it behind the testicles

After girth work mainly, to answer your question. I've been off for like a year and I decided that this is the year, I'm gonna go hard, hit my long term goal, and stop. I need about an inch in length and girth and I'm good. Trying to work back up in stages, be intense but not sili

As long as it is keeping expansion in the shaft, allowing the temporary gains to remain as long as possible, then you should be fine. The goal is to keep the expansion around long as possible.
