I can't get any cable or DSL where I'm at and wondered if anyone has had any experience with satellite high-speed internet service?

I am on shitty dial-up too and we almost got Bell Sympatico Satellite Internet (which I think just works off the same satellite we use for our Bell Dish for our TV)......So you dont have to get anohter dish if you already have the Dish for your TV......But there isnt Bell ExpressVu in the States is there.....Just DirectTV???, and other shitty ones...

Anyhoo, As of when we were gonna get it, the satellite internet can only Download fast, and you still have to Upload through your Dial-up modem......So if your not using your internet for games like UT and Counterstrike, your good.....but if you are your fucked......
I guess some company in the states is perfecting it, but not as of press time....
Its pretty expensive too....We got off the idea because our community might be getting Fiber Optics (which I thought went all to hell but I guess not)......

Why dont big cities have fiber optics in the states and shit, I live in a poor shitty rural area, and we are getting this shit.......Not one other city or place in the states or Canada has this to my knowledge.....They just set up towers like for cell phones and rural people can have unbeleivable fast internet, pretty cheap.....and it cant go defunkt, cuz nothing is faster than light, right??

what do you wanna know. I am an installer for directv and direcway services. plus have been trying to stay up on some of the newer contenders entering the scene like wild blue, galileo, net sat, etc... so ask away.

also you are right there are no legal services of bel expressvue in the states. but we have many service that the canadian government won't allow you to have like Directv, dishnetwork, voom and some other smaller service providers. And I know people in canada who have bel/dtv/and dish and so I am familiar with the difference like the lack of normal hbo..yes you can get some of the same shows but not like what we get off dish or dtv. But I would like to send a congrats on Bel getting NFL sunday ticket.

and as far as speeds go they vary based on rate you pay for, and some on the actual installers part. like for instance for dway the basic service is $59 a month after you purchase equipment or do that package deal thing. direcway will garantee you 400Kbps down and 20-100kbps up. but realisticly most installs easily 500-700Kbps down and upload is about right. but the upload threw the phone system is an outdated method that dway doesn't use anymore. now it's up and down threw the satellite. heck some of my customers have gotten rid of thier landline phone serive and went threw thier dway service and got vonage or another VoIP service. not bad for $30 a month to get unlimited calls to US and Canada plus all the features. but anyways. yes there is a latency issue with 2 way internet service about a 2 sec lag....but can be trimmed down with some tweaking. I have installed some that were very compareable to dsl with very little latency. also there are websites and things you can join (yes some have a fee) to improve your overall connection rate and lessen your latency. but after a basic install not an ideal situation for online first person shooting games like Doom, UT, etc... Also it is avail in canada as well.

Also valad you asked about the fiber optic issue. you're in luck as I also have done fiber optic, automation, telecommunication, and was an electrician for several years. and you are right in most cases it's a big business expense and yes in the big picture they can expand thier service and offer more but are they willing to bite the bullet or not is the question. also there is even newer technology I know a few places in canada are also beta testing offering highspeed internet threw your power company's lines, and a module would be at an out to seperate the freqs. and no as far as I know the US isn't testing it.

feel free to PM me if anyone likes for other questions or info I may be able to answer.

also forgot to mention that some subscribers to even the basic service with proper tweaks are noteing 800kbps-1.6Mbps down...and a slight mid to higher end on upload.

Loco,

So have the satellite companies perfected it so the uploading is as good as the downloading??? Bell Expressvu has about 10 more channels than DirectTv, my buddy has a black card for both...

And about the fiber-Optics, Our community got a 2 million dollar grant from the fed. Government to make a fiber optic network in the rural area I live in........It really isnt that expensive to do......a couple years ago it cost about 3 times as much as it does now....

Vlad,

yep I did hear they have more than any US satellite and even a all male gay channel late at night. but personally my life isn't all about so I'm all set. as far as your buddy having a "black card" for dtv...I would call BS bro...unless it's a sub'd deal they are selling illegally in canada, but I bet it's not wide open or he'd be a very very rich man. none of this is against you bud, not in the slightest, I don't have anything to do with that stuff myself but I do know a local that is very big into it.

and as far as the upload getting as good as download. the answer would be no. but heck almost no service offers that...my cable connection is 3MBps down and 256 up, DSL in the area is 1.5 Mbps down and 768 up. and cable at least won't even them out.still the big issue isn't the upload speed it's the latency. latency is the probably the biggest hiccup in satellite internet and yes it is alway being worked on to improve.

Penguinsfan, It's about band width mate, On dial up you may get 44 kbits per second. On DSL, satellite broadband, and Cable you can get Mega bits per second. Think of it this way on dial up your looking like snail speed, whereas on satellite and broadband you are flying in a jet. F16. If you tried to down load the SP1 service pack on dial up it would take five to six hours, whereas on satellite broadband, the same information would take about 20 minuits.

So, we might be talking about 10-20 times faster than dial-up with satellite? I don't do too much downloading of large files. I just mostly surf the web, research, read, etc., but it just kills me to wait several seconds for everything to load or a couple minutes for a site with a bunch of smoke and mirrors.
