American biowarfare labs cranked back up
Oakland Tribune |
"The Bush administration is ramping up bioterrorism research that will press beyond traditional defenses against natural biowarfare germs to explore genetically engineered superbugs, as well as the means to mass-produce and disseminate them... Among research thrusts, [the Homeland Security Department] tasked scientists to study how to 'acquire, grow, modify, store , stabilize, package (and) disperse' bioweapons and to run computer simulations of large-scale production. It called for 'red teaming' operations, in which scientists would figure out how to execute terrorist attacks." [Sounds like a good idea, in principle.]

My "area" in law school is biodefense/public policy. It scares the shit out me too, and the more I learn, the more scared it makes me. There is some really bad shit out there..shit that makes smallpox look like the common cold. Want to think about something scary? There are bunches of former USSR bioweapons scientists/engineers that are now out of work, thanks to the fall of Communism/break up of the Soviet Union. This is especially scary in light of the fact that the U.S. scrapped its bioweapons programs in the early 1970s. the Soviets were parties to the accord, but it is commonly known that they proceeded to develop/engineer bioweapons for another 18-20 years after we stopped. In short, there are a lot of unemployed mad scientists with a higher degree of bioweapons knowledge than the U.S. located in the countries neighboring Afghanistan, Pakistan, etc. The U.S. has employed some of these guys, but not very many. Sleep well.
