My point is that especially if you hire outside help, someone competent should be able to get a few threads restored within an hour. Something like this ought not cost hundreds of dollars.

I am sorry but that is bullshit. I used to run a vBulletin forum. Believe me restoring is not that big of a deal. It should take minutes to restore these threads and maybe an hour tops. Of course, from reading this site I think you would rather have everyone believe that you are "spending"...
